BEYOND THE OBJECT - POST-ABLE EXPERIENCES 2021
"In the advent of the pandemic, the postal system provided a life-line - a route to the outside-world from the comfort of our own homes, but what about the art experience?"
- Emma Barrow 2021
WHO AM I?
I'm Emma - a UK practice-based PhD student researching how art is experienced in our own homes since the advent of the pandemic. I am currently working on a research project to discover if looking and touching or just looking makes a difference to our experience and perception of an artwork.
As a designer - maker and installation artist, my research aim is to gain a greater understanding of participant experience. My installation topics are inspired by current events that resonate and inspire - my work aims to start a conversation. Such themes can sometimes be controversial - but aim to highlight a conversation we should start.
WHAT IS A POST-ABLE EXPERIENCE?
The object you receive is a miniature artwork, whether made or ‘found’ the object is my response to a concept. Some will be contained in a way that the artefact is not directly accessible - as you would see it in a museum or gallery - only allowing for a visual response, the rest will receive the object to play and feel with as you wish!
WHY POST-ABLE EXPERIENCES?
If there is one thing that will enforce re-assessment of a project, it is likely to be a pandemic. To ensure my research stays inline with government guidelines and for the safety and wellbeing of my participants, instead of you having to come to a large-scale installation, the post-ables can travel to you - to the safety and comfort of your own home - within the post-able you will receive an object to be pondered. All I ask from you as a participant is for the experience to be voice recorded.
